How Does a capacitive touch screen Work?

A capacitive touchscreen works by creating multiple independent capacitive sensing zones across the screen. When a finger approaches these zones, it forms a coupling capacitance that alters the local electric field. This change is detected and processed, allowing the system to determine the exact touch point.

Structural Layers of a Capacitive touchscreen

A typical capacitive screen consists of four layers:

  1. Top Layer: A thin (≈0.0015 mm) silica glass cover for protection and high transparency.

  2. Second Layer (Working Layer): An ITO-coated glass layer functioning as the active sensing surface.

  3. Third Layer: Another ITO-coated glass layer serving as part of the electrode matrix.

  4. Bottom Layer: A shielding or support layer for structural integrity and noise reduction.

The ITO patterns are etched in orthogonal X and Y directions to form a fine grid of “capacitive nodes” across the screen.


Working Mechanism of Surface Capacitive touchscreens (Traditional Type)

When a user touches the screen surface, their finger forms a coupling capacitor with the conductive layer. Since a high-frequency signal is applied to the working layer, a small amount of current is absorbed by the finger. This current flows out from the four corners of the screen.

The amount of current from each corner is theoretically proportional to the distance from the touchpoint to each electrode. The controller calculates the touch location using these current ratios, achieving up to 99% positioning accuracy with response times of less than 3 ms.


Projected Capacitive touchscreen (PCAP) – Mainstream Multi-Touch Technology

Projected capacitive (PCAP) technology is now the dominant solution for multi-touch applications, widely used in smartphones, industrial panels, and medical displays.

How It Works:

  1. Drive electrodes (typically X-axis) send excitation signals line by line.

  2. Sense electrodes (typically Y-axis) simultaneously receive these signals.

  3. At each crossover point, a mutual capacitance node is formed.

  4. When a finger approaches a node, it changes the local capacitance due to electric field interference.

  5. The controller detects the variation in capacitance at each node.

  6. The analog signal is converted to digital via an A/D converter.

  7. The system calculates the (X, Y) coordinates of the touchpoint.

  8. With multiple changed nodes, the system accurately determines all touch positions.

Signal Flow Overview:

  • X-axis transmits → Touch disturbs electric field → Y-axis senses

  • The system continuously scans the full grid at high speed to ensure real-time response.
