What is the difference between a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and what is often referred to as a “touch screen”? Technically, there is a fundamental difference between the two. A touch screen is only the hardware component that may be used in an HMI product. It replaces the mouse and keyboard functions and is installed in front of the display as an input device. In contrast, an HMI is a complete device integrating both hardware and software for human-computer interaction.

In industrial settings, people often call HMI products with touch functionality “touch screens,” but this terminology is not scientifically accurate. In fact, a touch screen is simply a transparent piece of glass that can be operated by hand. The correct understanding is: A touch screen is the common name for “an HMI with touch functionality.”


1. What is the difference between an HMI and a touch screen?

Strictly speaking, there is a fundamental difference. The touch screen is only a part of the hardware that might be used in an HMI product. It serves as an input device replacing the keyboard and mouse. Meanwhile, an HMI is a fully functional interactive system that includes both hardware and software. Calling an HMI with touch functionality a “touch screen” is a common but imprecise usage.


2. What is the difference between an HMI and configuration software?

HMI products (often referred to as "touch screens") include HMI hardware and dedicated configuration software. Generally, each HMI manufacturer provides their own configuration software that works only with their devices, which typically interface with PLCs. By contrast, general configuration software supports a wide range of devices such as PLCs, industrial PCs, instruments, inverters, and I/O modules, and is often used in large-scale monitoring systems.


3. Does an HMI product have an operating system?

Yes. All HMI products have system software that runs on the device’s processor to support multitasking. These systems require a lightweight embedded operating system to manage their functions. High-performance HMIs, such as those based on panel PCs, typically run WinCE, Linux, or other embedded operating systems.


4. Can an HMI only connect to a PLC?

Not at all. While HMIs were originally designed to interface with PLCs, advances in computer and digital circuit technologies have enabled many industrial control devices to support serial communication. As a result, any device with serial communication capability—such as inverters, DC motor controllers, temperature controllers, and digital acquisition modules—can connect to an HMI to enable human-machine interaction.


5. Can an HMI only connect through a standard serial communication port?

In most cases, yes. However, modern HMI devices are increasingly versatile. In addition to traditional serial ports (RS232, RS422/RS485), many now include Ethernet ports, parallel ports, USB ports, and other interfaces. These allow them to communicate with industrial control equipment that has similar interface types, expanding their application range.


6. Can all devices with communication functions connect to HMI?

Generally, yes. As long as the corresponding communication driver is available in the HMI’s configuration software, communication between the HMI and the device can be established. If the HMI software does not include a driver for a specific device, the user can provide the communication port type and protocol information to the HMI manufacturer and request that a custom driver be developed.


7. Can a PC with a touch screen communicate directly with a PLC and function as an HMI?

Yes, absolutely. However, appropriate HMI software must be installed and configured on the PC in order for it to function as a true HMI.


8. What is the future development trend of HMI?

With continuous advances in digital circuitry and computer technology, the distinction between high-, mid-, and low-end HMI product lines will become less clear. HMI products will become increasingly powerful and feature-rich. Trends include:

  • All HMIs over 5.7 inches will have color displays and longer lifespans.

  • As computer hardware becomes more affordable, high-end HMIs based on flat-panel PCs will dominate the market due to superior processing speed, memory, communication interfaces, networking capability, and software resource sharing.

  • Compact HMI devices (under 5.7 inches) will also remain widely used due to their small size and low cost, especially in small machinery. As their functionality improves (e.g., adding I/O capabilities), they will support even broader applications.
